Using Signalong Outside

Getting out and about with your baby is a perfect opportunity to bring Signalong into everyday life. Outdoor environments are full of rich, real experiences that naturally support communication, attention, and language development. Whether you’re on a walk, playing in the park, or enjoying a family day out, signing can help your child connect words with the world around them.

Here are some practical and enjoyable ways to use Signalong outdoors with babies and young children.

Why use Signalong outside?

Outdoor settings are ideal for early communication because they offer:

  • Constant new vocabulary (animals, weather, transport, nature)

  • High interest and motivation

  • Shared attention opportunities

  • Natural repetition of key words and signs

For babies and toddlers, this combination helps signs become meaningful quickly, especially when they are consistently paired with real experiences.

Signing on a walk

Walks are full of simple, repeatable moments that are perfect for signing.

Things you might sign:

  • Walk

  • Stop

  • Go

  • Tree

  • Bird

  • Car

  • Dog

Try slowing down at key moments to draw attention to what you’re signing about. For example, if you see a dog, pause, point, sign “dog,” and say the word clearly. Repetition is more important than perfection. Make it interactive:

Even before your child signs back, they are learning. Over time, you may notice them:

  • Looking at what you sign

  • Reaching or pointing

  • Attempting their own signs

At the Park

Parks are rich environments for shared play and communication.

Useful Park signs:

  • Swing

  • Slide

  • Play

  • Ball

  • More

  • Finished

How To Use Them

When your child goes on the swing, sign “swing” as you push. When they want another go, model “more.” If they are finished, sign “finished” as you leave. These small, repeated exchanges help children understand that signs are powerful tools for expressing needs and choices.

On Days Out

Whether you’re at a zoo, farm, beach, or café, days out offer exciting opportunities to expand vocabulary. Examples:

At the zoo:

  • Animal

  • Big

  • Small

  • Names of animals you see e.g Tiger, Monkey

At the beach:

  • Water

  • Sand

  • Ice Cream

  • Hot

At a café or picnic:

  • Eat

  • Drink

  • Hungry

  • More

These environments naturally encourage curiosity, making children more likely to engage with new signs.

Tips for successful outdoor signing

1. Keep it simple

You don’t need to sign everything—choose key words that matter in the moment.

2. Be consistent

Repeat the same sign in the same situation to build understanding.

3. Follow your child’s interest

If they’re fascinated by birds, focus your signing around birds.

4. Make it fun

Signing should feel natural and playful, not formal or forced.

5. Use face-to-face interaction

Get down to your child’s level where possible so they can clearly see your signs.

Using Signalong outdoors helps turn everyday experiences into meaningful communication moments. Walks become language-rich adventures, parks become interactive learning spaces, and days out become opportunities for connection and understanding.

Most importantly, signing together outdoors strengthens communication in a natural, relaxed way, helping babies and young children feel seen, included, and able to express themselves long before speech fully develops.
